Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is POM (Peace Of Mind Therapy, PLLC)?

Peace of Mind Therapy offers individual, couples, children and family counseling services. Counseling or therapy helps an individual, couple, or family focus more in depth on specific areas of concern to help reduce conflict, improve self awareness and strengthen relationships.

How do I know if POM Therapy is right for me?

If you are feeling the mental, emotional, and physical effects of stress in relation to work, school, and family responsibilities or are struggling with adjusting to a life changing event, we can help you. Please note that even expected and welcomed changes can bring about unexpected and unpleasant feelings (ex: new relationship, career advancement, parenthood, etc.) that can require attention.

POM Therapy works with adults and children seeking therapy to address issues related to: anxiety, self-esteem, depression, stress, ADHD, trauma, grief and loss, marriage and relationships, divorce, anger, childhood trauma, domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual identity and orientation, addiction, parenting/co-parenting, employment, self-harm, etc.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Contact POM at (248) 397-4705 to schedule an appointment or leave a form request on the website. Please leave a brief message including your name and contact information and your call will be returned within the next business day. At that time, one of our licensed therapists will speak with you regarding your need for services and schedule an intake session. Intake appointments generally last 60-90 minutes.  We offer both tele-health options and in person sessions.

What are your hours?

We understand convenience plays a role in scheduling appointments. We offer scheduling during traditional times and in order to accommodate non-traditional schedules, we offer some early morning 45 minute sessions (5, 6, or 7 am), daytime, evening times, and weekend appointments.

How long are appointments?

Initial sessions are required at the start of therapy. The frequency of subsequent sessions will be determined by your therapist and client based on need and availability. Initial sessions generally run 60-90 minutes, while follow ups are scheduled in 45 minutes or 60 minute increments.

Do you take my insurance?

POM currently accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield. POM also accepts private pay (cash, check or charge) and payment is due at the time of service. However, you may be able to obtain reimbursement from your insurance company or access medical spending and/or healthcare saving accounts to help offset out of pocket costs for counseling. POM will assist in checking your insurance coverage, but ultimately you are responsible to know your insurance coverage.  Please contact your insurance provider directly with any coverage questions.

Rates:

Individual Therapy $150 (approx 60 mins)

Shortened Session $120 (approx 45 mins)

Couples/Family Therapy: $150 (approx 60 mins)

Intake Session: $200 (approx 60-75 mins)

How can I justify this out of pocket expense?

Attending counseling or stress reduction sessions are an investment in your health. According to the American Institute of Stress, 3 out of 4 healthcare visits are stress related. Prevention and management is necessary to avoid long term consequences on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Insurance carriers require a diagnosis code and can determine the necessity of sessions based on progress, which is why some clients opt to keep mental healthcare separate in an effort to maintain privacy and flexibility.  Private pay allows for a more client-centered process, where the therapist and you, the client, determine the frequency of appointments, establish goals, and develop strategies based on individual need, opposed to relying on insurance companies for authorization of services and payment.

Please communicate any concerns related to payment to your therapist.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Yes. Trust and rapport are especially important in the counseling process. We understand the importance of having a safe and calm environment to explore self-improvement. Sessions will remain confidential and your information will not be disclosed without your written consent, with the exception of cases of possible harm to yourself or others (especially children or elderly) or a criminal court subpoena..

What can I expect at my first counseling appointment?

Your first session will include completion and review of paperwork (history, office policies, payment, follow-up appointments, etc.) and exploration of reasons for seeking services. Initial sessions generally run 60-90 minutes, as the therapist is collecting information while the client shares their story.

What can I expect during appointments?

You can expect a safe and judgment free environment, where you are free to share your story. Collaboratively, Lauren and the client will identify goals and a treatment plan focusing on the individual strengths and needs of the client. Progress toward those goals will be reviewed during follow up sessions.

In an effort to promote whole body wellness, we look forward to sharing additional resources, reading material, local events, etc.

How long will I need to attend appointments?

Sorry, but there’s no magic number on this one. Progress has been closely related to the strength of the client-therapist relationship and for someone struggling with trust, this may take a bit longer. THAT IS OKAY. Our mission is to help you get to a place where you feel well mentally and emotionally, with a greater sense of peace, which isn’t time specific.

Sessions will be determined based on need, availability, and affordability. Ideally, termination or completion of therapy is a collaborative decision. Sometimes clients disengage or cancel appointments once they feel the discomfort of change, so please communicate any questions or concerns.
